Documents in Cyprus Checked: no change to the rule has been established since the check
In short
- Who it applies to
- Non-EU nationals who work remotely: employed by a company registered abroad, or self-employed with clients abroad. Neither you nor your family may have Cypriot employers or clients. A spouse and minor children come with you on permits of their own.
- What it costs
- €70 for the permit or a renewal and €70 for first entry in the Aliens' Register — for each family member. Unlike a visitor, you need no bank guarantee, but you do need private health insurance that covers hospital care.
- How long it takes
- The department gives 5 to 7 weeks for examination. The first permit is issued for a year, a renewal for up to two years, and the scheme gives no more: three years in all.
- Where to apply
- Only at the Migration Department's central offices in Nicosia, without an appointment — first come, first served. You enter on an ordinary visa where one is required and file within 3 months of arrival; if you already live in Cyprus on another basis, you file from there. Renewal is also in person in Nicosia, at least a month before the permit ends.
- If your case differs
- Spend more than 183 days in Cyprus in a year and you become a tax resident, paying Cypriot tax on all your income — the scheme does not exempt you. The citizenship law does not exclude your years as a nomad, but there are three of them and seven are needed.
Your case
If you are employed by a company abroad
You need an open-ended employment contract, or one at least as long as the permit you ask for, and a letter from the employer: you can work remotely and the work does not concern Cypriot companies. Add a certified extract of the company's registration abroad, its contact details and your position. Income is shown by payslips with the net sum and bank statements for 6 months. The scheme does not forbid changing employer: at renewal the new employer's documents are filed again.
If you are self-employed
Instead of an employment contract you file contracts with clients running at least as long as the permit you ask for, and your own written confirmation that the work is remote and you have no clients in Cyprus. If you have no payslips showing net income, a sworn statement that you receive at least the threshold after tax and contributions takes their place. Bank statements for 6 months are needed either way.
If your spouse and children come with you
Each family member files their own application and gets a permit for the same period as yours. They may not work or run a business in Cyprus, and you sign the undertaking not to work for Cypriot employers or clients on their behalf too. The income threshold rises: by 20% for a spouse or partner and by 15% for each child. A marriage or birth certificate is needed; children under 6 give only a photograph.
Deadlines and conditions

- more than 183 days in Cyprus in a year makes you a tax residentArt. 2 of the Income Tax Law Ν.118(Ι)/2002: a resident is a person who «παραμένει στη Δημοκρατία για μια ή περισσότερες περιόδους που υπερβαίνουν στο σύνολο 183 ημέρες στο φορολογικό έτος»; no further conditions.
- citizenship needs 7 years of residenceLaw 141(Ι)/2002, s. 111Β(1)(β): lawful residence of at least seven years within the ten years before the final year; only periods as an asylum seeker, a protection holder or a student are excluded from the count.
Tax reliefs and contributions
The Income Tax Law gives general reliefs to people who take up work in Cyprus for the first time. Whether they apply to a nomad with a foreign employer, and which contributions — Social Insurance and GESY — a nomad owes, neither the Migration Department nor the Tax Department says specifically. Ask the Tax Department or a tax adviser before the 183 days are up.
What comes after three years
The scheme gives a year and a renewal for two more — the department does not say what comes next: neither a new nomad permit nor a switch to another basis. If you want to stay longer, ask the Migration Department early, before the last renewal.
