Nicosia centre shut to traffic Wednesday for October 28 parade
Police will close several central streets and ban parking from midnight October 27 ahead of the parade and the doxology at the Archbishopric.
Central Nicosia will be largely off-limits to cars on Wednesday as the capital hosts the October 28 parade, with police announcing a parking ban and a series of rolling road closures, as reported by Cyprus Mail.
Parking is prohibited from midnight on October 27 around Archbishopric Square and on several adjoining streets and avenues, including Korai, Isokratous, Zinonos Kitieos, Michalakis Karaolis, Konstantinou Palaiologou, Omirou, Vyronos and Evagorou.
Closures begin at 9am on Omirou Avenue between Aigyptou Street and Eleftheria Square, and on Vyronos Avenue from the Museum lights to Griva Digeni; from 9.30am the parade route and Dimosthenis Severis Avenue are added, along with Makarios III Avenue from the Nicosia Central Police Station lights to Evagorou.
What it means for residents
Anyone whose usual Wednesday morning takes them through the centre should plan a different route or leave the car behind, because the restrictions bite from early morning and last through the parade.
- Commuters: buses from Strovolos, Lakatamia, Engomi, Aglantzia and nearby suburbs will drop and pick up at alternative points — Rigainis Street near the Solomos statue and Kaningos bridge — so allow extra time.
- Drivers: use the Davila moat, Town Hall moat, Fire Service and Kolokasi car parks, and follow officers on duty rather than sat-nav routes.
- Spectators: stay on the pavements and leave drones at home, as their use is banned.
