Cyprus on Track for Full Schengen Membership by 2027
Deputy Migration Minister Nikolas Ioannidis says the six remaining actions will be wrapped up by early November, clearing the way for Cyprus to join the Schengen area within 2027.
Cyprus expects to complete its full entry into the Schengen area sometime in 2027. According to Deputy Minister of Migration Nikolas Ioannidis, the six outstanding actions should be finished by the start of November.
Speaking to RIK, he explained that once those steps are done, the European Commission will be informed of Cyprus's technical readiness, allowing the process to move into its next institutional phase. He noted that joining also involves technical procedures and close work with other EU member states, with bilateral contacts already under way, including with Luxembourg.
Ioannidis added that once membership is formally completed, checks at Cyprus-related internal borders will be abolished and the necessary IT systems will be fully operational.
What it means for residents
Full Schengen membership would change how people on the island travel and how the Republic's borders are managed. The practical effects will not be felt immediately, since the remaining actions still have to be completed and reviewed by Brussels.
- Travel: Once checks at internal borders are lifted, flying or sailing between Cyprus and other Schengen states should become faster, with no passport control on arrival.
- Documents: Rules on IDs and residence permits may shift as IT systems go live, so residents should watch for official announcements before planning trips or renewals.
- Timing: Nothing changes yet; the process still runs through 2026 and into 2027, so current travel rules continue to apply for now.
