In short

Who it applies to
Couples who want to marry in Cyprus — both those who come for the wedding and those who live and work here.
What it costs
A marriage 15 days after the notice costs €128.15; sooner than that, €281.92. Each certified copy of the certificate is €13.67. Municipalities set their own surcharges: in Limassol a ceremony on a Saturday or outside working hours costs €130 extra, and a venue outside the town hall is charged separately.
How long it takes
Both of you go to the municipality in person and give notice of marriage. The wedding takes place no sooner than 15 days and no later than 3 months after; under the special procedure it can be the same day or within days, if the officer accepts your reason.
Where to apply
At any municipality you choose, before the Marriage Officer — Λειτουργός Τέλεσης Γάμων. The Cypriot single-status certificate comes from the Registrar of Marriages at the Civil Registry and Migration Department in Nicosia.
If your case differs
You need 2 witnesses with passports or ID cards. The ceremony is in Greek or English; anyone who understands neither brings an interpreter. A church wedding by a registered priest is the same marriage, not a second one; its certificate is sent to the Registrar within 45 days.

Your case

You both come to Cyprus as visitors to get married

You do not need a Cypriot certificate — only a single-status certificate from your own country, no more than 3 months old, with an apostille or consular legalisation and a translation into Greek or English. If divorced, the final divorce decree; if widowed, the spouse's death certificate. Passports and birth certificates. You give notice together and in person, and if you do not want to wait 15 days, ask for the special procedure — for €281.92 you can marry the same day.

You are both citizens of other EU countries (not Cyprus)

The law exempts you from the Cypriot certificate even if you live here: a certificate from your own country, no more than 3 months old, is enough. Many EU documents are accepted without an apostille, and an EU multilingual form can replace the translation. But municipal lists go further than the law: Lakatamia, for example, asks EU citizens for the yellow slip and a sworn statement of marital status from the court — check with your Marriage Officer in advance.

At least one of you lives in Cyprus — works, studies, holds a residence permit or has stayed over 3 months

Besides the certificate from your country, you need a Cypriot one: first a sworn statement of marital status at the court, then with it to the Registrar of Marriages at the Civil Registry and Migration Department in Nicosia. Both certificates must be no more than 3 months old on the day you apply. When giving notice you also declare your residence status in writing and show a valid residence permit. The authorities may check that the marriage is genuine and interview each of you separately.

One of you is a Cypriot citizen

A Cypriot citizen gets the Cypriot certificate the same way — a sworn statement at the court, then the Registrar of Marriages — plus an ID card and birth certificate. The foreign partner brings a certificate from their own country, and if they live in Cyprus, a Cypriot one too. A thalassaemia certificate is optional.

You are a same-sex couple

Under Cypriot law marriage is only between a man and a woman. You can enter a civil partnership — πολιτική συμβίωση: it is registered by the district registrar, not the municipality, and both must be at least 18. Partners have the same rights and duties as spouses, except adoption.

Which documents your municipality will ask for

The law sets the minimum, but municipal lists differ: some ask for a birth certificate, others for a sworn statement from the court even from EU citizens. Call the Marriage Officer of the municipality you choose before ordering certificates at home, and ask whether your translation will do or a sworn translator in Cyprus is needed.

Recognition of the marriage at home

Cyprus itself sends a copy of the certificate to your country's embassy in Cyprus, if there is one. Whether the marriage must be registered at home, apostilled or translated is up to your country — ask the consulate before the wedding.
