Cyprus opens €20m home energy upgrade scheme on October 20
Households can apply for grants of up to €32,000 to make their homes more energy efficient, with applications opening October 20 and closing December 30, 2026.
Homeowners in Cyprus will be able to apply for government grants worth up to €32,000 to improve the energy performance of their properties, as the energy ministry opens a €20 million scheme on October 20, as reported by Cyprus Mail. The initiative, named Save and Upgrade Homes 2026, falls under the Thalia 2021-2027 programme and receives co-financing from the European Regional Development Fund and the Republic of Cyprus.
Applications are accepted only through the ministry's online grants platform and will be handled on a first-come, first-served basis, with one application per person. To be eligible, a property must be individually owned, have an existing EAC domestic electricity account in an individual's name, and have been connected to the grid before January 1, 2008, or had its planning or building permit submitted before December 21, 2007.
Funding covers thermal insulation, window and door replacements, shading, solar water heaters, high-efficiency air conditioning and heat pumps, as well as photovoltaic and battery storage installations and expert services. Category A offers up to €32,000 for upgrades reaching nearly zero-energy building status with at least 60 per cent primary energy savings, while Category B provides up to €24,000 for the same savings without the nearly zero-energy requirement. Higher amounts are available for vulnerable consumers, mountain-area homes and refugee housing.
"The ministry stressed that applicants must obtain an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) before submitting their application."
What it means for residents
For those living on the island, this is a rare chance to cut both energy bills and upgrade an older home, but the window is tight and the process demands preparation. Anyone interested should act early and line up the required certificate before applying.
- Get your EPC first. The certificate must be issued by a qualified expert registered with the Energy Service and dated May 15, 2026, or later — without it, an application cannot go ahead.
- Prepare documents now. Check that your EAC account is in an individual's name and that your property meets the connection or permit date cut-off, as these are hard eligibility conditions.
- Move quickly. With first-come, first-served assessment and a budget that can run out early, submitting soon after the platform opens on October 20 gives the best chance of securing funds.
