Cyprus has fulfilled every recommendation set by the European Commission and is technically prepared to join the Schengen area as a full member, Deputy Minister of Migration and International Protection Nikolas Ioannidis said in Luxembourg on Thursday, as reported by Cyprus Mail. What remains, he argued, is a political agreement among EU member states, and Nicosia is counting on its partners' backing over the coming months.

Speaking before a meeting of the Justice and Home Affairs Council, Ioannidis also voiced solidarity with Spain over the recent crisis in Ceuta, stressing that any member state facing mass migration flows must receive tangible support and that the EU should act in a coordinated way to protect its territory and the Schengen zone. He added that Cyprus backs stronger cooperation with third countries to boost returns, and warned that restrictive measures should follow if partners refuse to cooperate.

"From a technical point of view, Cyprus is ready to become a full member of the Schengen area," Ioannidis said.

What it means for residents

Full Schengen membership would change how people on the island travel and how the island is policed at its external borders. Until the political nod arrives, nothing changes on the ground, but the direction of travel is clear.

  • Travel: Once inside, Cyprus-issued residence permits and short-stay visas would be valid across the Schengen zone, and checks at airports for flights to and from Schengen states would ease.
  • Borders: Closer EU coordination on returns and early-warning systems could mean tighter screening at ports and airports, so keep travel documents and permits up to date.
  • Timing: The decision is political, not technical, so expect months of talks rather than an immediate switch.
