Cyprus to add parents' names to new ID cards by end of November
The Interior Ministry says holders of Cyprus' new biometric identity cards will soon be able to include their parents' names, with free replacements for those already issued.
As reported by Cyprus Mail, Cypriots who want their parents' names printed on the country's new biometric identity cards should be able to opt for this by the end of November, according to the Interior Ministry.
The decision responds to complaints that the names were omitted from the redesigned cards. Anyone who already received a card without the names and now wants them added can swap it at no cost at a Citizen Service Centre, Citizen Centre or District Administration once the system is updated.
The ministry said the contractor handling card issuance told the Interior Minister in mid-September that it had begun modifying the system, a job expected to take about two months. The ministry said its Civil Registry Directorate is in ongoing contact with the contractor and will publish full details of the replacement process once the work is finished.
What it means for residents
The change matters for anyone whose new ID is already in their wallet or who is about to apply for one. Until the system is updated, parents' names cannot be added, so there is no point queueing at service centres yet.
- Wait for the announcement. The ministry will publish the exact replacement procedure once the technical work is done — check for that update before visiting an office.
- Keep your current card. Do not discard the version without parents' names; it remains valid until you exchange it.
- Replacement is free. Those who want the names added will not pay for the new card, but they must hand in the old one at a Citizen Service Centre, Citizen Centre or District Administration.
