Cyprus home energy grant scheme closes after two days as €27.5m runs out
The energy ministry stopped taking applications for the "save and upgrade homes" grants after demand exhausted the entire budget in under two days.
All funds for the government's home energy efficiency grant programme have been committed, the energy ministry said on Wednesday, closing the scheme barely a day and a half after it opened. According to the Cyprus Mail, the ministry had originally planned a €20 million pot but topped it up with €7.5 million redirected from unspent money tied to earlier programmes.
Applications had been scheduled to stay open until December 30. The grants were meant to help homeowners carry out work such as thermal insulation, new windows and doors, solar water heaters, efficient air conditioning and photovoltaic panels, with up to €32,000 available per household.
The ministry described public interest in the scheme as "particularly high".
What it means for residents
The speed of the shutdown shows that many households were ready to invest in energy upgrades and were counting on state support to make the numbers work. Anyone who had not yet filed has missed this round entirely, and planned renovation budgets now need rethinking.
- Watch for a repeat round. Top-ups came from unused money in older schemes, so a fresh window may open if more funds are freed up — keep an eye on ministry announcements.
- Rework your budget. If you were relying on a grant for insulation or solar panels, decide whether to postpone the work or fund it yourself.
- Keep documents ready. Should a new call appear, having quotes and ownership papers prepared will matter, since places clearly go fast.
