Pension reform bills head to cabinet after legal review
Labour Minister Marinos Mousiouttas expects the legal service to finish vetting the pension reform bills by Monday, paving the way for cabinet approval and a parliamentary vote.
Cyprus's long-awaited pension reform is nearing the final stretch, with Labour Minister Marinos Mousiouttas telling the Labour Advisory Body on Thursday that the bills could reach the next cabinet meeting, as reported by CYPE. He said the legal service is expected to complete its drafting review by Monday, after which the package would be approved by ministers and sent to the House of Representatives.
The minister acknowledged that the last hurdles are the hardest, saying:
«Μπαίνουμε στην τελική ευθεία»— we are entering the final straight. Separately, positions on the second pillar of the pension system, namely provident funds, are taking shape in the technical committee, and discussion is due to move to the advisory body.
Employer organisations OEB and KEBE have already submitted their views in writing, while SEK and PEO are expected to send theirs by the end of the day and by Monday respectively, according to their representatives.
What it means for residents
The reform will shape retirement income for today's workforce, so anyone paying social insurance or enrolled in a provident fund should follow the parliamentary stage closely.
- Watch the timeline: cabinet approval is expected soon after Monday's legal check, but MPs can still amend the bills.
- Check your fund: changes to provident funds may affect contributions and payouts, so review your scheme's terms.
- No action yet: nothing changes until the House votes, but keep an eye on announcements from your employer or union.
