The government's plan to build 460 affordable homes on state land is already on track for implementation, Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou said on Tuesday, as reported by CYPE.

Speaking at an award ceremony for the architectural competition tied to the Affordable Housing on State Land scheme, Ioannou said the initiative is part of a wider housing policy designed to expand housing options and help vulnerable groups.

The €70 million project will see 460 residential units built on state plots and then offered at affordable rents. The units will be located in the municipalities of Latsia-Geri in Nicosia, Aradippou in Larnaca, Kourio in Limassol and Ierokipia in Paphos.

Ioannou said the policy works on two main fronts: increasing the housing supply, especially affordable homes, and strengthening the purchasing power of residents, particularly young people and families. He described the architectural competition as proof that affordability can go hand in hand with quality, functionality and sustainability.

The minister also said the use of state land for affordable housing, along with a separate scheme granting state plots to families, reflects the principle that public property should create added value for society.

Editorial note

What it means for residents

The plan adds a new batch of rental homes in four districts, which could ease pressure on young people and middle-income households struggling with high rents. The first units are still some way off, as construction has not yet started, but the announcement signals where future affordable housing will be concentrated.

  • Watch local announcements for eligibility criteria and application windows, expected to be published closer to completion.
  • Location matters — the units will be in Latsia-Geri, Aradippou, Kourio and Ierokipia, so check whether any of these areas suit your work and daily commute.
  • Rent levels are not yet set, so keep an eye on official updates if you plan to apply.
