Nicosia walled city traffic shifts as roadworks enter new stage
From Monday one section of Konstantinos Palaiologos avenue reopens to cars, but several nearby streets stay shut while the moat regeneration project continues.
Drivers leaving Nicosia's old town will get a more direct route again from Monday, the municipality announced on Wednesday, as a new phase of work begins on Konstantinos Palaiologos avenue. Under the "Regeneration of the Inner Perimeter Arch of the Moat, Phase A" project, the A2 stretch — the exit from Thermopylon Street to the Oxi roundabout — returns to traffic.
That link puts motorists back on a straightforward path towards Stasinou avenue and Eleftheria square through the Oxi roundabout. Other restrictions stay as they are, and the whole scheme is not due to wrap up until early 2027.
The A3 section, running from the Oxi roundabout to the municipal car park entrance at Promachonas Kostantza, remains shut until mid December, while the east side of Konstantinos Palaiologos avenue stays closed between Archbishop Makarios II square and the same car park, open only to residents and emergency services.
What it means for residents
The works touch anyone who drives into or out of the old town, so a little planning before setting off saves a lot of circling.
- Plan your exits. Westbound drivers heading for the pedestrianised area are directed via Stasinou avenue, the Doros Loizos bridge and Konstantinos Palaiologos street from the Oxi roundabout.
- Leaving the old town. Use Lefkonos, Diogenous, Piraeus, Patriarch Gregorios and Agios Antonios streets for Stasinou and Salaminos avenues; for the Doros Loizos bridge and Eleftheria square take Lefkonos, Aeschylus, Hippocrates, Thermopylae and the Oxi roundabout.
- Know the limits. Vehicles over seven metres and lorries are barred from the walled city, and residents on Xanthi Xenierou street keep two-way access only.
