Residents of the DIPA block of flats on Grigori Afxentiou Avenue in Larnaca have been granted extra time before they must move out, as reported by Phileleftheros. The Larnaca District Local Government Organisation (DLGO) was told on Tuesday that the residents had appointed their own engineer and had already begun fixing hazardous parts of the building.

The evacuation will be avoided only if that engineer confirms the structure is sound. The block, one of the largest and oldest in the city, contains 64 flats and 12 businesses, and its managers say around 400 people live there.

DLGO president Angelos Hadjicharalambous said the engineer will meet the organisation's enforcement department to agree binding schedules. The priorities, he said, are proving the building's structural adequacy and carrying out work such as removing loose plaster.

Editorial note

What it means for residents

The reprieve is conditional, so people in the block should not treat it as a permanent reprieve from the evacuation order. Everything now hangs on the private engineer's report and on repair work moving fast enough to satisfy the DLGO.

  • Keep documents ready. Until the structural certificate is issued, residents should have essentials and paperwork packed in case they must leave at short notice.
  • Watch the timetables. The binding schedule agreed between the engineer and the enforcement department will set the real deadline for making the building safe.
  • Owners and tenants should coordinate. Those living in the flats and running the 12 businesses need a shared plan for repairs so that work does not stall.
