Larnaca evacuates 64 flats, 12 shops from unsafe DIPA block
The Larnaca DLGO has declared the DIPA building on Grigori Afxentiou Avenue extremely dangerous, giving residents and businesses three days to leave.
Dozens of households in central Larnaca face an urgent move after the Larnaca District Local Government Organisation classified the DIPA building on Grigori Afxentiou Avenue as extremely dangerous, as reported by philenews. The organisation said the order covers 64 apartments and a dozen commercial units, and that occupants were told on Friday to be out within three days.
Signs now block passers-by from entering the block, where those living and trading there said they still had no clear departure date and nowhere to relocate. While visiting the site, philenews observed visibly worn columns, adding to long-standing doubts about how sound the structure is; the municipality had repeatedly flagged its condition before.
This is the second such decision in the city by the Larnaca DLGO, following the evacuation of the Madona building in Faneromeni in May.
What it means for residents
The order puts families and shop owners in the difficult spot of finding temporary accommodation and premises while the fate of the building is decided. Anyone renting or owning in older Larnaca blocks should check whether similar structural warnings exist for their address.
- Housing pressure: short-notice relocation adds demand to a local rental market that is already tight and expensive.
- Businesses: shops in the block may lose trading days and customers while they look for alternative space.
- Tenants and owners: keep paperwork on your lease or title, and ask the Larnaca DLGO and municipality about support and inspection results for your own building.
