Fikardou is a small village on the south-eastern slope of Troodos, in Pitsilia. In 1978 the whole village was declared an Ancient Monument and a controlled area, and in 1987 its restoration won the Europa Nostra award.

The village is an open-air museum of stone houses and narrow lanes. Vehicles are not allowed in, so you explore it on foot. A small coffee shop offers a traditional Cypriot welcome.

What Fikardou is known for

The whole village is protected: its houses have been restored and two of them now form a rural museum. The community council has held free workshops on different dates through the year, including pottery, weaving, embroidery, painting, basket weaving, winemaking and local sweets.

The village is tiny, and its lanes and roads were not built for crowds: in 2022 the Christmas village drew more than 200,000 visitors in about fifty days.

Trails and surroundings

The Lazania – Fikardou trail offers panoramic views over the area and links up with the Machairas – Lazania and Fikardou – Archontides trails.

Machairas Monastery is less than 15 minutes away.

Getting there

The village lies south-west of Nicosia. By car, follow the E903 and then the E904; one of the two roads into the village comes from Kalo Chorio Oreinis. Leave the car outside the village.

The museum occupies two old houses, the House of Katsinioros and the House of Achilleas Dimitri, both owned by the Department of Antiquities. The ground floor of the Katsinioros house was used for pressing grapes and storing produce and tools, all of which are on display. The Achilleas Dimitri house holds a weaver's workshop, and there is an exhibition of photographs, drawings and texts on how the houses were restored.
