A restaurant at Limassol Old Port suffered damage to its outdoor dining equipment, a glass window and part of its wooden flooring after a fire broke out at about 4.55am on Saturday, as reported by Cyprus Mail.

According to the Fire Service, the flames began among seating equipment in the outdoor area. A security guard used a hose linked to the premises' fixed firefighting system to put the blaze out before crews arrived, and firefighters later checked the site and confirmed it was fully extinguished.

An inquiry into what caused the fire is expected to follow.

Editorial note

What it means for residents

The Old Port is a busy nightlife and dining spot, so a fire there matters beyond one business: it puts attention on how prepared venues are for incidents outside opening hours.

  • Check your safety kit. If you own or manage a venue, make sure hoses and fixed firefighting systems are serviced and reachable.
  • Expect checks. Premises around the port may face closer scrutiny of their outdoor setups in the coming weeks.
  • Plan your evening. Diners heading to the area should be ready for a possible closure or reduced seating at the affected restaurant.
