Cyprus's meteorological department has put out a yellow-level alert for Wednesday, covering inland parts of the island, the northern areas and the higher mountain zones, as reported by Cyprus Mail.

Isolated and powerful storm cells are forecast for these districts, and hail is possible in some of them. Downpours could locally exceed 35 millimetres per hour, the department said.

The warning stays in force until 6pm.

Editorial note

What it means for residents

A yellow warning is not a lockdown — it means the weather can turn quickly in your area, so build in some slack if you have plans on Wednesday afternoon.

  • On the roads: sudden heavy rain cuts visibility and pools water fast, especially on mountain routes and rural inland lanes — allow extra time and slow down.
  • At home or on a plot: check that balconies, terraces and any garden drains are clear before the storms arrive, and bring in or tie down loose items.
  • Hail risk: if you park outside, a covered spot is worth taking; crops and garden plants in exposed spots are vulnerable too.
