Three large waterspouts formed off the Protaras coastline at around 8am on Friday, according to Cyprus Mail, just as heavy rain started falling over the area. Videos shot by residents have spread quickly on social media.

The Department of Meteorology expects the rest of the day to stay mostly cloudy, with scattered rain and isolated thunderstorms concentrated over the mountains, inland districts and the north and east. Hail may fall during storms, while winds of force 4 could shift direction and pick up to force 6 in thunderstorm conditions.

Editorial note

What it means for residents

Unsettled weather of this kind affects daily plans across the island, from coastal outings to mountain drives, so a quick check of the forecast before heading out is worthwhile.

  • Coastal activity Waterspouts are usually short-lived but can be dangerous, so it is safer to stay off the water and away from exposed beaches while storms pass.
  • On the roads Heavy rain and hail reduce visibility and grip, especially on mountain routes, so allow extra time and drive with care.
  • Outdoors If thunder is nearby, move indoors and secure loose items on balconies and terraces before winds strengthen.
