Police wrote 99 tickets on Sunday to riders caught without protective helmets, as part of an islandwide traffic operation, the force announced on Monday.

Beyond the helmet violations, officers logged 305 other traffic offences, among them nine instances of driving without a licence. Authorities also confiscated 17 personal mobility devices and nine motorbikes.

According to police figures for the year to date, 1,360 motorcyclists, 381 cyclists and 1,845 users of personal mobility devices have been booked for riding without a helmet. The force said checks will keep running day and night across Cyprus.

Editorial note

What it means for residents

The numbers show helmet checks are no longer occasional — they are routine, and they apply to e-scooters and bicycles just as much as to motorbikes. Anyone using a personal mobility device to commute or run errands should treat a helmet as standard equipment, not an optional extra.

  • Fines add up quickly. A single stopped ride can cost more than a helmet, and devices can be seized on the spot.
  • Rental and shared scooters. If you use one, check whether a helmet is provided before you ride off.
  • Expect checks at any hour. Police say patrols continue around the clock, so short trips close to home are not exempt.
