Riders of two-wheelers represented 38 per cent of fatalities on Cypriot roads over the five years from 2021 to 2025, while young people made up 26 per cent, according to Transport Minister Evi Tsolaki, as reported by Cyprus Mail. The minister, who heads the road safety council, was speaking in Limassol at the launch of a campaign against distracted driving.

Prepared with the press and information office, the drive targets young and vulnerable road users and draws attention to what happens when drivers lose concentration. Tsolaki said the strategic plan aims to halve deaths and serious injuries by 2030, through safer infrastructure, updated legislation, awareness work and cooperation with local authorities.

“Behind every statistic lies a human life lost and a family experiencing an irreparable loss,” she said.

What it means for residents

The measures touch everyday travel in cities, where most fatal and injury crashes happen. Lower speed limits and rider subsidies are the practical side; the distraction campaign asks drivers to change habits.

  • Speed zones: 30 km/h limits are being funded, particularly near schools and in residential areas — expect new signage and slower traffic on your street.
  • Rider gear: a subsidy for airbag protective clothing has been running for four years, worth checking if you ride a motorbike.
  • Phone use: set navigation before departure, keep the phone out of reach, and pull over safely if you must use it.
