Drivers on the Nicosia–Limassol motorway faced difficult conditions on Thursday afternoon as heavy rain moved in, Cyprus Mail reports. The downpour started at about 2.30pm between Tseri and the Pera Chorio Nisou area and Kornos.

Water is streaming across parts of the carriageway and pooling in places, while visibility has dropped. The wet surface has become slippery.

Police are calling on motorists to reduce their speed, keep a safe gap from the car ahead and switch on their headlights.

Editorial note

What it means for residents

The Nicosia–Limassol motorway is the island's main north–south link, so even a short burst of heavy rain can ripple through evening commutes and airport runs. If you are heading out on that route, build in extra time.

  • Slow down early. Standing water and a slick surface mean braking distances grow, especially around Tseri, Pera Chorio Nisou and Kornos.
  • Check before you leave. Conditions on this stretch can change within minutes, so allow a longer window for any journey.
  • Keep your distance. A bigger gap and dipped headlights make you easier to see in poor visibility.
