Motorists faced difficult conditions on Friday morning as heavy rain swept highways across Cyprus, according to Cyprus Mail. Part of the Limassol-Paphos motorway near Polemidia was flooded.

Rain also fell on the Nicosia-Limassol highway between Kakoratzia and Choirokoitia, and on the Larnaca-Ayia Napa route between Kosi and Oroklini.

Police asked drivers to be careful, keep a safe distance from the vehicle ahead and switch on their headlights.

Editorial note

What it means for residents

For anyone commuting between cities on Friday, the wet roads mean longer journeys and a higher chance of skidding. Flooded stretches can force lane closures or slow traffic to a crawl, so it is worth checking conditions before setting off.

  • Leave earlier. Build extra time into morning or evening trips on the affected motorways.
  • Drive defensively. Keep your distance, use headlights and avoid standing water where you cannot see the road surface.
  • Watch for updates. Police advisories and local traffic reports are the quickest way to learn about closed lanes or new flooding.
