Nicosia General cardiology outpatient care split into 13 specialist clinics
From January 1, Okypy is reorganising the hospital's cardiology outpatient services into 13 dedicated clinics, each led by assigned doctors, with patients routed by condition.
Okypy, the state health services organisation, said on Monday that outpatient cardiology at Nicosia General Hospital will be split into 13 dedicated clinics and services starting January 1, as reported by Cyprus Mail. Each unit will have its own designated doctors.
The reorganisation is meant to give complex heart cases better handling by specialist teams, including interventional cardiologists, electrophysiologists and cardiovascular imaging experts. Patients will be sent to the clinic and medical team that fits their diagnosis, following current scientific evidence.
Okypy noted that the hospital runs Cyprus's biggest cardiology department, with wards, a cardiac intensive care unit and a catheterisation laboratory working round the clock, plus a non-invasive laboratory accredited by the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging (EACVI).
What it means for residents
The change mainly affects how patients reach a cardiologist at the island's largest state hospital. Instead of a single outpatient desk, care is divided by condition, so the route from referral to appointment changes.
- Referrals: your GP or private cardiologist needs to name the right clinic, so confirm the destination before booking.
- Existing appointments: check whether a scheduled visit has moved to one of the 13 new services.
- Private care: Okypy says the aim is cooperation, not competition, and that private doctors can still call on the hospital's specialists and equipment.
