Euroleague clears Limassol arena for Maccabi Tel Aviv home games
Euroleague has approved Limassol's Spyros Kyprianou arena as Maccabi Tel Aviv's home court this season, with the first game there next week.
Euroleague has given the green light for Maccabi Tel Aviv to stage its home fixtures at the Spyros Kyprianou arena in Limassol, as reported by Cyprus Mail. The club will begin playing there from the 11th matchday, opening with a Tel Aviv derby against Hapoel, coached by Demetris Itoudis.
The arrangement covers this season and 2026-27 "until further notice", according to the Euroleague. The Limassol venue, which holds 8,000 spectators, is Cyprus's biggest indoor basketball hall and hosted 15 games of the third group at Eurobasket 2025.
Maccabi had been using the Aleksandar Nikolic Hall in Belgrade as its home court since the Hamas attack of 7 October 2023. The club formally requested Cyprus as host in a letter to President Nikos Christodoulides on 22 September.
What it means for residents
Hosting top-tier Euroleague games in Limassol brings visibility and visitors, but it also puts pressure on local infrastructure and policing. Match days will mean traffic restrictions and a visible security operation around the arena.
- Security costs: Police unions say about 500 officers are needed per game, with the overall bill estimated at over €1 million; the Justice Minister has said Maccabi will be invoiced.
- Match-day disruption: Expect road closures and heavy traffic near the Spyros Kyprianou arena; check travel plans before evening fixtures.
- Tickets: Plans foresee 3,000 seats for Maccabi fans, 1,500 for the Cypriot public and 100 for visiting supporters, though final arrangements are not yet agreed.
