Cyprus health authorities have warned the public after laboratory tests on goods taken from a retailer of CBD products found cannabinoids not previously identified in them. The checks were run jointly by the National Addictions Authority (NAAC), the police, the Pharmaceutical Services and the Health Services, as Cyprus Mail reports.

Among the seized stock were e-cigarette refills, cigarettes packed with plant matter and herbal preparations. Analysis showed six distinct new cannabinoids inside one vaping liquid alone.

The authority flagged the danger of goods shoppers assume are mild while they may actually carry strong psychoactive compounds with unknown content. Reported reactions range from racing pulse, heavy drowsiness and confusion to panic, poisoning or psychotic symptoms.

“The fact that a product is sold in a shop does not guarantee its safety,” the authority said.

What it means for residents

If you buy vaping liquids, herbal mixes or CBD items on the island, the label alone is no longer something you can lean on. Anything of unclear origin is best left on the shelf, and a product already at home that you suspect should be dropped.

  • Keep the packaging if you feel unwell after use and tell the doctor or nurse exactly what you took.
  • Never mix these products with alcohol or other substances, and do not get behind the wheel afterwards.
  • Store them out of reach of children and call an ambulance at once if someone loses consciousness, cannot breathe properly or has a seizure — and do not leave them alone.
