Cyprus patients left without ileostomy bags for ten days after shipment delay
The patients' federation says a delayed ship cut off essential ileostomy supplies for about ten days and is urging authorities to hold emergency stocks on the island.
According to the Cyprus Federation of Patients' Associations (CyFPA), people with ileostomies on the island spent around ten days without the bags they depend on, after a vessel bringing the supplies arrived late. The federation also reported that certain medicines have been scarce or in very short supply, putting patients in difficulty until fresh batches landed.
CyFPA secretary Charalambos Papadopoulos told Phileleftheros that stocks in the cases it raised have since been replenished, but that even temporary gaps ranged from minor inconvenience to serious risk. He explained that the bags collect intestinal output after ileostomy surgery and must be swapped regularly for hygiene, skin protection and everyday activity, so users cannot simply wait for a new delivery.
“We cannot tell ileostomy patients to go ten days without the supplies they need,” Papadopoulos said.
He added that the federation hears of patients unable to obtain what they need nearly every month, and of shortages of particular medicines almost weekly. While the Health Insurance Organisation (HIO) and the Ministry of Health usually respond once importers flag a problem, he said, warnings often come too late, and the group wants all involved bodies to create a mechanism that keeps emergency stocks in Cyprus.
What it means for residents
If you or a family member relies on medical consumables or regular prescriptions, the story is a reminder that supply chains can wobble even when the system eventually catches up. Planning ahead is the practical defence.
- Build a small reserve. Ask your doctor or supplier whether you can keep a few extra days of bags, dressings or tablets at home within what your prescription allows.
- Report gaps fast. Tell your doctor, the HIO or the patients' federation as soon as an item runs low, rather than waiting for the next order.
- Watch for warning signs. Late notifications are the weak point, so flag any hint of delay from your pharmacy or supplier early.
