Water has pooled on sections of the Paphos–Limassol motorway after heavy rain struck the route on Wednesday, according to the Cyprus Mail. Drivers are being asked to reduce speed, leave a wider gap to the car ahead and use headlights.

In Paphos district the weather shifted abruptly over just a few kilometres: the town centre stayed sunny and unusually warm, while rain in Emba and Tala was heavy enough to reduce visibility to a few metres. Near Agios Neophytos Monastery a short hailstorm left the roadway white.

Showers continued in scattered spots until shortly before the report, even as sunshine held in lower parts of Paphos.

What it means for residents

Wednesday's downpour is a reminder that Cyprus weather can turn within a few kilometres, so a journey that starts dry can end on a flooded carriageway. Anyone heading between Paphos and Limassol should allow extra time and treat standing water as a hazard rather than a puddle.

  • On the motorway: slow down before wet stretches near Pissouri, keep a longer braking distance and drive with lights on.
  • Locally: hail and poor visibility can hit hillside villages such as Emba and Tala while the coast stays sunny — check conditions before leaving.
  • Plan ahead: if heavy showers persist, consider delaying non-essential trips on exposed roads.
