Since yesterday, emergency crews have dealt with 14 weather-related incidents around the island, as reports Cyprus Mail. The Fire Service says heavy rain hit several districts.

Six of the calls came from Polis Chrysochous and Paphos, where crews pumped water out of underground spaces and cleared drains. In Larnaca, two incidents involved vehicles that had become stuck on flooded roads; they were moved together with the people inside.

Another six incidents were recorded in Famagusta, covering rainwater pumping as well as trees that had come down or were blocking roads.

Editorial note

What it means for residents

Autumn storms on Cyprus routinely overwhelm drainage in low-lying streets, so the practical effects are local and immediate: detours, water in basements and car parks, and short power or access problems.

  • Check your route. Avoid underpasses and streets known to flood during heavy rain, especially in Paphos and Famagusta.
  • Clear what you can. If you own or manage property, make sure drains and balconies are free of leaves and debris before the next downpour.
  • Report problems early. Call the Fire Service or local authorities when water starts rising, rather than waiting for it to reach buildings or vehicles.
