Traffic towards Nicosia was disrupted on Thursday when a crane truck came to a stop on the Larnaca–Nicosia highway, roughly one kilometre before the Rizoelia roundabout, as reported by Cyprus Mail. The vehicle ended up in the emergency lane and partly in the left lane, and officers were on site trying to move it.

Widespread rainfall is worsening driving conditions across the island, with water collecting on the asphalt and visibility cut back. Police are asking drivers to slow down and stay attentive to the road ahead.

According to the police, the picture could shift as the weather develops; their advisory reflected conditions as of 12.15pm.

Editorial note

What it means for residents

If your route runs through Rizoelia towards Nicosia, expect a squeeze in the left lane and give yourself extra time while the truck is cleared. Rain like this turns the highway slippery fast, so the usual commute can take longer than planned.

  • Plan around the blockage Allow extra time or pick an alternative route if you drive towards Nicosia past Rizoelia.
  • Adjust your driving Cut speed, increase following distance and watch for standing water and spray.
  • Check before you go Conditions can change through the day, so look for updated police advisories before setting out.
