As the hunting season gets under way on Sunday, the forestry department is calling on hunters to guard against wildfires, noting that rain in some wooded areas has not removed the danger. According to the department, lighting fires outside permitted spots, tossing cigarette ends or used matches can all spark a blaze.

It added that fires in past years have wiped out large stretches of forest and countryside, harming habitats that game and other wildlife depend on. Hunters are asked to carry their rubbish out and pick up spent cartridges, which the department describes as a serious source of pollution and something wildlife protection law forbids.

Anyone who notices smoke or flames in or around a forest should get in touch with the closest forest station straight away, or dial 1407 for the forestry department and 112 for the fire brigade. Neither call costs anything.

Editorial note

What it means for residents

Sunday's opening brings more people, vehicles and guns into the countryside, so the chance of a stray spark turning into a major fire rises for everyone living near forest land — not just those taking part.

  • Know the numbers. Save 1407 and 112 now, so a plume of smoke can be reported without delay.
  • Expect more traffic. Rural and mountain roads will be busier from early morning on Sunday; allow extra time and watch for parked cars.
  • Keep clear. If you live close to woodland, avoid activities that produce sparks outdoors while the risk stays elevated.
