The Nicosia District Local Government Organisation (EOA) has started installing 72,000 smart water meters across its network, as the Cyprus Mail reported on Friday. The first replacements got under way on Monday in Area 9 of Engomi, with Latsia (Area 21) and Lakatamia (Areas 40 and 41) to follow.

The ultrasonic devices log consumption every day and transmit the figures to the organisation automatically, so manual readings are no longer needed. The authority says this gives it a clearer view of network use and helps flag sudden shifts in demand that may point to a leak.

Households that sign up for the online portal can also track their own usage remotely and will be alerted by email or SMS when something looks wrong. Registration needs a consumer or meter number plus a mobile phone, and instructions will come with the next bill.

Editorial note

What it means for residents

The change matters most for anyone whose property has an old meter in Engomi, Latsia or Lakatamia: the swap is done by the authority, but the benefits depend on residents signing up for notifications. Without registration, a hidden leak may only show up on the bill.

  • Register early. Have your consumer or meter number and a mobile phone ready and sign up through the EOA portal, using the instructions that arrive with your next bill.
  • Watch for alerts. Treat an unexpected email or SMS about your consumption as a prompt to check for dripping taps, irrigation lines or pipe damage.
  • Track the schedule. A map showing which areas are being covered is published on the organisation's smart meters page, useful if you are waiting for installation.
