Nicosia police warn of possible road closures for Apoel centenary events
Motorists are being advised to stay away from central Nicosia on Saturday as Apoel marks 100 years with a Fan Day and torch relay through the city centre.
Police are advising drivers to keep away from the heart of Nicosia on Saturday, when Apoel stages a full day of centenary celebrations and a torch relay moves through the centre. According to the force, temporary traffic rules or road closures could be brought in to keep the event safe.
The Fan Day opens at the Apoel building at 5pm. An hour later the relay leaves the site of the former Hadjiioannou pastry shop on Ledras street, travels down Makarios avenue and ends at the club's headquarters on Limassol avenue.
Officers anticipate large crowds and say emergency measures may be activated later in the day if they consider them needed for security and public order. They are asking the public to map out routes beforehand and obey instructions on the ground.
What it means for residents
Anyone whose Saturday routine runs through central Nicosia — shopping on Ledras, errands near Makarios avenue, an evening out in the old town — should expect delays and possible detours, with changes announced at short notice.
- Plan around the evening. The relay starts at 6pm, so finish city-centre trips earlier or use ring roads instead.
- Watch for Sunday too. Eleftherias square and the old town hall will be lit in the club's colours that evening, which may draw crowds to the same area.
- Follow police directions. Closures are decided on the day, so check official updates before setting out.
